The cable avoiding tool and signal generator (genny) are commonly used to locate underground cables and pipes on site, but they are often used by untrained staff. This could result in errors being made, and the posibility of accidents occurring. This course will enable candidates to understand fully the correct operation and functions of this equipment....

Who Should Attend?

Cable Avoidance and Service Location CAT & Genny training is designed for any person working on the roads, setting out before a build, surveying and any other person excavating an area where pipes or cables may be hidden underground.

Joining Instructions

The course will be conducted in English, and any training materials supplied will be in English. Delegates must have a good understanding of spoken and written English. If any delegates have any language or learning difficulties, please advise us as soon as possible., , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , Delegates should arrive at the training centre at least 15 minutes before the course is due to start. Delegates arriving late may not be allowed onto the course, and course places will be chargeable in full. A full charge will also be made for delegates who fail to turn up. , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , There is a practical element to this course, and delegates must bring safety footwear. They will also need safety helmets and hi visibility jackets. If delegates would prefer to wear their own helmets and jackets they should also bring these, otherwise these items will be available to borrow.

Course Agenda

The course begins with an introduction to the principles of cable avoidance, including the use of electromagnetic fields to detect underground services. Trainees will also learn about the different modes and settings of the CAT and Genny and how to interpret the signals to accurately locate utilities. This section also covers best practices for using the equipment and troubleshooting common issues.

Next, trainees will have the opportunity to practice using the CAT and Genny in a simulated environment, allowing them to gain hands-on experience and improve their skills. This practical session will cover techniques for locating different types of utilities, such as live and dead cables, and how to distinguish between them. Trainees will also learn how to use additional equipment, such as sondes and signal clamps, to enhance their utility detection capabilities.

The course also includes a section on risk assessment and hazard identification, highlighting the potential dangers of working with underground utilities and how to mitigate these risks. Trainees will learn about the different types of hazards, including electrical, gas, and water, and how to safely approach and work around them. They will also be taught how to properly mark out utility lines using industry-standard techniques and equipment.

The final part of the course is a review and assessment of the material covered. Trainees will have the opportunity to ask any final questions and clarify any doubts before taking the assessment. The assessment will cover both theoretical and practical aspects of the course and will be conducted under the supervision of a qualified instructor. Upon successful completion, trainees will receive a certificate of competence, proving their proficiency in using the CAT and Genny and their understanding of safe utility detection practices.
